Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 7

So a little late today, started uploading earlier and BANG the power went out. Contacted hydro, seems one of the donkeys on there generator wheel refused to co-operate and they were looking for a replacement. Back on, a little over a hour later, must have found a replacement donkey sitting on the gold plated thrown in the CEO's office, ha ha lol. Why so hard on hydro? They think they are government, at least they treat you the same way. They are constantly harking on literature we pay for, about how to reduce power consumption, and the less power they have to deliver, the higher the delivery prices go, meanwhile the delivery network is so neglected you don't even need a storm to take the power out.

So enough of that, here is the last part of "Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering". I hope some of the followers here have enjoyed the clarified info in this book. Something like this should be a course required by everyone thinking of going into the trades or mechanical engineering  fields. I have found it is the next best thing to actually getting your hands dirty at the bench.

Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 6

So were nearing the end of this fine, practical and hands on textbook. Hopefully the student and the experienced have garnered information not previously available to them. In this installment are two chapters, 17 Finishing and Assembling and 18 Erecting Finished Assemblies. As in previous chapters there are lots of illustrations clarifying the concepts and methods discussed. This completes the more practical sections of this textbook. In the last section, "Chemistry For Craftsmen" are 3 parts. Part 1 "Intro. To Chemistry of Engineering Materials", Part 2 "Corrosion Of Metals", and Part 3 "Chemical Changes And Heat Treatment". These have been touched on before, in this section the science behind these concepts is explored in greater detail. Look for this last part next week.

Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 5

Been under the weather for the better part of a week, but I think we got her beat now, so better late than never, here is part 5 of "Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering". This part includes chapters 15 and 16. Chapter 15 covers "Simple Marking Out" essential to making machine components that fit together with accuracy.

Chapter 16 "Fitting - Tools For Fitting To Size By Shearing" covers all aspects of what I would call bench work. Lots of info and tips for working with chisels, hacksaws, shears, files, scrapers, taps, dies, drills and others. These skills would benefit anyone without a shop full of machine tools and even they have to resort to bench work sometimes.

Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 4

So here is part 4 of "Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering". This part covers chapters 13 and 14. Chapter 13 covers shaping by fabricating and includes folded, rivetted, soldered and welded seams. The next section, hand shaping to accurate sizes, starts off with chapter 14 and covers measuring principles and practice.

Welding tech has made big advances since 1963 and most measuring equipment such as calipers now have digital read outs. But you can still benefit from this fabricating info. and a good understanding of measuring principles and practice.

Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 3

So hopefully there is interest in this fine volume of metalworking information. Here are the next 5 chapters, starting with, safety in the use of tooling then moving to the principles of tooling and then planning for tooling. Next we move to the shaping to rough sizes section. Covered first is foundry work, this is followed by a chapter on shaping by forging.

For those following this posting check back next week for Part 4 and the next set of chapters.

Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 2

So hopefully the first part of "Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering" found some interest. For those interested here is part two. This part covers the next four chapters starting with hardening and tempering of metals, moves to testing for properties and then covers protection and coloring of metals. Chapter 7 introduces the fabrication of a lathe to illustrate purpose and standards of tooling.

As mentioned before this is as good basic information for the hobby metalworker as you will find anywhere, in a easy format.

Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering Part 1

So to replace the PMSN installments I have a good number of old but not to old books that might find some interest here. Scanning, cleaning up, and packaging a book is very time consuming, so I will package the larger books in installments of 40-50 pages to make it easier to upload.

"Pictorial Textbook Of Engineering" is the textbook I wish I had when I took shops in high school. I mostly remember them as goofing off periods, and the instructors didn't seem to care. An outline involving this text might have changed that. You will find excellent info on the engineering metals, their properties and how to work them, you will find info on all the methods of working metals, take you through the production of a lathe, and covers the tools you will use, all clearly illustrated. Even the section "Chemistry For Craftsmen" is well illustrated to make some deeper concepts easy to grasp.

This vol. is 303 pages, so it will take 7 installments to upload the whole book. The quality is not perfect but better than many I have seen.
